Getting faster, very slowly
Hi all,
Help! I´ve just (re) discovered cycling by accident at the ripe old age of 54 and I´m wondering if there´s a Cyclists Anonymous because it´s getting out of control!
A few months ago I injured a knee injury that meant I had to stop running, so started to cycle more often on my nearly 20 year old Coventry Eagle ´Cannon´. This is certainly no flying machine and a 7 mile trip from Battersea to Kings Cross felt like a marathon. Wasn´t enjoying much it to be honest. Then three things happened:
First, a work colleague cycled the Tour de France route on a touring bike carrying a tent and a ton of back up gear, and I followed his progress on his daily blog. Most inspiring. Second, I took my bike to Apex Cycles in Clapham to get the gears looked at, and they had a second hand Trek 7100, which I bought on the spur of the moment. Big improvement on the twice a week commute to work.
Third, my daughter´s boyfriend turned up at our house with a beautiful custom single speed bike. It weighed about the same as a box of matches and, perched in the front room, it kept sort of winking at me, knowingly.
So suddenly I´m hooked. I seem to spend half my time in and out of bike shops buying ´accessories´ or lurking in the basement of Condor cycles gazing at the ´goods´ like an old perve in a porn bookshop. I´ve got a Charge Plug in the post (299.99 from Wiggle, can you believe it!?) and now need a Sunday best bike (well as close as I can get with a grand under the C2W scheme. Any suggestions gratefully received!
I´m trying to draw up a short list and so far have come up with:
Condor (various)
Specialized Allez Elite
Chris Boardman Team thingy
Charge Juicer Hi
Wieler, Giant, Scott, Cube, aaaagh the list goes on.
I´m off to the bike show at Earl´s Court on Thursday.
Will this madness never end!

Thanks

PS The knee turned out not to be so serious. And now I´m getting fit, so the missus (sorry dear if you´re reading this) can´t complain. Better than the Porsce mid life crisis!

I expect most of your Sunday Best bikes will be around the same performance level - but some have different geometries so it may be worth having a test ride or two.

You should be warned - there lurks an even greater danger to sanity and wallet - they are called wheels.

Hi Jim and Welcome to CC :hello:

If there was a Cyclists Anonymous then I wouldn't join anyway. I rather like being addicted to cycling...

P.S. IME, not having a reason to moan never stopped any woman!!!

you've got considerable problems.

1. You're very old.
2. You come from South London.
3. You've started hanging out in bike shops and discussing potential buys with people you don't know

There's only one thing for it. Get you buns down to Hyde Park Corner on Sunday at 9.30. I know the people that go on these Sunday rides, and, while they're all clearly in need of psychiatric help and at least one social skill, keeping company with them will at least make it easier for the authorities to round you all up.

Hi Jim

A lot of folks on here seem to be buying new bikes at the moment. The perfect way to lift your spirits, now the bad weather is inbound! ;)

I rescued a Boardman comp myself from the clutches of Halfords, in June. Only the SC version mind you. The geared one looks good for around 700 or the carbon for a grand, if that's what you had in mind? Saw a couple of tempting Cubes on Chain Reaction website in your price range, but have no direct experience myself. Spesh are always good and you could test ride one in Apex cycles, as they stock this brand.

There's a lot out there on sale at the moment if they have your size left, as shops flogging off 2010 bikes to clear space for 2011 models.

That is exactly what I mean - Simon is quite a young fellow really. I would like to post an emoticon but this thread already has sufficient misunderstood irony so I will desist.

Thanks for the reply. Never heard of Spesh so will check them out. Maybe they'll be at Earls Court?
