HG80 and a Mavic Aksium rear wheel

Before I tighten up the cassette fully to the hub.. on tha basis that if I do I might not be able to undo it again..
the 9 speed cassette on hand tight is still quite loose... does this cassette need any more shims than those already supplied and fitted to make it properly secure?
The wheel is 9 speed compatible etc etc

When I fully tighten it with the cassette tool will the cassette become secure?

You need the special wee spacer that should have come with the wheels.

Cheers! and I have just found that special spacer.. they had stuffed it in a bag that I almost missed!!

Which bit of the cassette does it go.. or does it matter?

The spacer goes on first - i,e, remove cassette, and pop the spacer on - so it's nearest the spokes
