I like escallonia. Nice tight growth, nice spring flowers, very hardy and easy to take cutting of. got mine hedge for free

We planted a yew hedge on one side of our front garden about 10 years ago, it's grown nearly 1.5m since. The dog wood along the front has grown considerably more than that, as has the holly / pyracantha along the other side, but the yew is still the one that I'd choose.
