Idiocy, or poor signage?

A spokesman added: “Although the signs may look contradictory, the reality is that cyclists know what they need to do on this stretch of the route.

How exactly do they know what to do here....powers of telepathy perhaps? Total farce....going by my local council its no surprise!

Is it a "no cycling" sign?

I would have thought that would have a red line through it?

Doesn't that sign mean bicycles only?

To me I would assume that the no cycling actually referred to the road. Where is the post in relation to the road/path?

Classic piece of half-honest journalism there. This sign has been up for over 10 years, I go past it almost every day, and I've never once scratched my head while looking at it (bit difficult with a helmet on!).

But, yes, it is chronically bad signing. Strangely the no-cycling sign does not have the diagonal red line. Look it up in the Highway Code. Don't know why not.

No. Any circular sign is an instruction (aot warning or information). A red border forbids whatever is contained in the circle (like exceeding 40mph for example). It is the no-smoking (and no right/left/u turn) signs that break this convention. The rest conform.

You do know your Highway Code? I seem to recall someone on here being roundly condemned for not knowing it (specifically in relation to cycling signs) ^_^ .

Placement of these signs is obviously the result of a confused mind at the council .

Well it's set well back from the road so I doubt it is a problem especially as it is a dead end anyway. But why didn't they just paint an arrow on the ground directing cycles onto the road if they wanted to make it clear?

From that street view image it looks like the council have grown a tree in front of the sign to hide it anyway!
