you don't become the housewives favourite for nothing, and Frankie demonstrated yesterday why ordinary punters back him without a thought for the horse underneath him.

and run it from about 27 minutes.

Forget Jensen Button. Dettori's feat eclipses Button's victory in Canada. His horse, Rewilding was up against So You Think, a nag referred to by its trainer ".....an incredible horse, a different creature to what we've seen before and we are very lucky to have him racing on this side of the world this year". So You Think was backed down to 4/11 on, including one bet of ninetythousand quid, whereas Rewilding took small stakes (sadly mine not amongst them) at 9/1.

Come the race, cometh the jockey. So You Think had a pacemaker and everything went to plan. Dettori waited and waited at the back, showing for the first time about three furlongs out. Timing is everything and Dettori's timing was just sublime - a gradual accelleration that took him to the line a head in front of the favourite. Perfect riding, perfect timing.

There's only one Frankie!

A year or so ago I got held up next to the starting gate on York racecourse (it runs across the cycle track).

It was a big race and the jockeys had just got their mounts into the stalls and were awaiting the start. One of them was Frankie Dettori and he was asking his neighbouring jockey where he had been on his hols! Then they were off..
