Insurance and Bike Replacement

Had the bike stolen yesterday . Fortunately it's insured (won't put a smiley face here as I put a lot of time and effort into getting that bike "right"). Do insurance companies usually replace like with like or just give you a cheque-excess to source yourself?

Cheers!

I feel your pain, had my bike stolen at the end of 2011. My insurance company, M+S offered to replace the bike with one of a similiar quality, or they would offer me a cash settlement. If I had gone for the latter I wouldn't have had enough to go out and buy the bike I wanted so I opted for the like for like replacement.

The bike was, eventually, supplied through Wheelies and it was nothing but hassle.

Had my bike stolen last year. Insurance policy was for a replacement (like-for-like), up to the value I had insured bike for £500.
The valuers agreed that a like-for-like couldn't be purchased for £500 and sent me a cheque. I was happy as the bike I had nicked was 2nd hand road-bike, and I went an purchased a 2nd hand replacement which is a touring bike.

I claimed of an driver for getting hit recently. I had to get the bike checked out but once my LBS wrote them a letter saying it's written off, they just gave me a cheque. Still waiting on the rest of the money for everything else though

Still waiting to hear from the insurance company. I've already ordered a replacement lock and am just waiting for it to arrive. The bike was insured for £1k. If I get the cash then I might give a Cyclo Cross bike a try (I want something that'll take winter punishment and the progressively worse potholes I have to ride over) - but if they replace with a bike of the same make/model then I'm just as happy.

Some one has tipped me off to a local car boot sale as a potential sale location of stolen bikes - so will be taking a trip there this Sunday.

Just had a call from the insurance company - they're sending me £1000 of Halfords vouchers to get a new bike (on the basis of that's what it'd cost to replace the stolen bike with a new one). Plus a few extra £'s to replace lights etc...

Well happy - was half expecting to get screwed with a "estimate of worth now" settlement. Very, very happy with this. Hopefully new bike shopping over the weekend!!

Good result and happy shopping.
I knew someone who got a cycle to work scheme bike from Halfords, he was surprised to find out they could source lots of bikes that they don't normally stock.

Shopping list done:

1 bike
1 set of mudguards
1 pannier rack
1 trunk bag
1 pump
1 multi tool
1 lock.

The rest I had spares etc.. for. Let the vouchers arrive!!

As an aside - has anyone attempted to fit SKS mudguards to a Boardman CX? I assume it's the same difficulties as to a Hybrid Pro (i.e. you have to bend around the disk caliper).
