just had a message from a "friend" on face book. hes an old acquaintance from one of my other hobbies. basically he works for a national company that specialises in this hobby so he is a well known face (but not a celebrity).

anyway, this is the message...

"Please excuse this request, but my wife's dad is desperately ill in Australia and (she) is trying to raise funds to see him in hospital before it's too late. If you can help by donating any money at all, it would be great. Thanks".

not sure what to think about this, whilst i genuinely sympathise, is it going to far ???

PS: dont worry, he won't see this

That is a bit odd, obviously I don't know their circumstances, but especially if he is working, you'd think they would be able to get the money for a plane ticket together. If I was in that situation, I'd certainly speak to family and maybe close friends first and not approach people via facebook.... And if I was really desperate, then I would give some more information as to why I'm struggling, rather than just basically asking people to give me money...

A while ago my friend had her FB account hacked. Word was sent saying she was trapped abroad with no money and needed financial help. Of course, non of that was true , she was alerted and got things sorted before any harm was done. It seems as if a similar thing might have happened here. Do you have any contact with this person outside of FB? He needs to be alerted so that he can sort it. Something along the lines of 'I know this can't be you because you would never be so crass' might do the trick either way!

just look at face book and it seems its genuine. his wife is appealing for donations to help pay for a flight to see her terminally ill father in Australia.

seems they have had mixed reactions from friends and family . as they said, no harm in asking ???

PS: please dont go searching face book for the appeal, mums the word (or maybe dads the word ;) )

well if it is genuine they are some truely hardfaced people.... im afraid if i had someone in my facebook friends list that did that they would get deleted straight away.. terminally ill parent or not its dam cheeky to ask for a handout.. if they were that desperate they should just put it on a credit card or get a loan out!!!!

I have, when my car's gear box died, asked on facebook if any of my friends would be able to let me borrow their car for the weekend (some of my friends are part of a family with more than one car that is used during the week and not at weekends) and detailed that my insurance did cover me and that it was to get my wife to and from work - being a nurse it's odd times and there is no public transport on a weekend.

A friend spotted it who was, with her husband, going away for the weekend and using his car, so I borrowed hers - she felt happier if I paid £16 to be added to her insurance for the weekend which was fine with me.

was that too far, or as it's not money is it just a much larger and more valuable cup of sugar?
