Joe Biden and his Presidency deserve their own thread....

I'd actually like to spend less on military by doing away with the garbage contracts but still end up with the same quality operation, or better. I mean, thousands for a hammer and all that. It has to go.

One of the companies I deal with won a contract to manufacture pallets and packing cases for the MOD. To my surprise, they asked for stainless steel nails - 316 grade. These are approximately 10 times the cost of the usual cheap n cheerful ones used. Seems extravagant, right? Except these pallets and packing cases are expected to be capable of storing things in often damp warehouses, underground bunkers and so on for up to 50 years - long beyond the time bright nails would have weakened to the point of uselessness. Imagine going to pick up emergency medical supplies only to find them unusable because the packing case fell apart.

Sometimes, there's a reason for seemingly high up-front charges.

hanging-on in quiet desperation ...
I'll probably get shot down for this, but am I the only one unamused by the Bernie thing? I think he looked so scruffy and so disrespectful to Biden and Harris. He lost the nomination and I'm sure that rankles but Obama was the epitome of grace when Trump was elected. Bernie's scruffy uncle thing makes him look like a bad loser.
I agree in part, but he’s an old guy who probably just wanted to keep warm. Remember Michael Foot’s raincoat?
I think faaar too much is read into this stuff....

This is a very fair point. I'm not convinced that Sanders could have beaten Trump. If it was a fair fight, perhaps, but it would have been all to easy to play the "reds under the bed" card and as we've seen over here in Plague Island with Corbyn it's a difficult perception to shake, particularly if the enlightened centrists are actively against you.

Post McCarthy, America's Overton Window is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over there ------------------------------------------------------>
Short of inventing a time machine and going back to kill McCarthy before he gets to spout his gibberish I'm not sure what can be done to realign America with reality. There are some things about US voting demographics that I simply don't understand, like the sizeable pro-Trump Latino faction.
It has been said that many of those have been fed the Trump/Republican scare stories about Biden etc. being Communists at heart, and this has worried many of those whose countries of origin have more experience of "Communist/Socialist" leaders.

Yes. There are lots of things about the pro-Trump factions that don't make sense. Like the many blacks who are also loyal to His Orangeness. I just don't get it. Frankly, I can't understand how anyone no matter what their color or background could possibly continue to support that moron after everything that has happened during the past four years. After much debate I've only come up with one reason. Stupidity.

I agree. That rationale makes sense. And just so you know I can admit when I'm wrong, I just found an article that explained, quite plausibly, that the $600 hammer that was in the headlines back in the 80's was a fiction. The actual cost of the hammers was $15 a piece. But I do believe that this country needs a robust military. Now that Trump is gone I'm hoping that we can go back to a more productive relationship with China although not so one sided. And hopefully we can go back to ignoring Russia and little Vlad.

Exactly. I don't see any deep political issues here, nor deep satire in the memes; it's just a funny image on such a prominent world stage, and juvenile dolts all over the world are entertained by such things.

I think this is the next level:

Well it would be highly racist to suggest that black people are any less well represented in the ranks of the 'Hard of Thinking', so there I guess there's bound to be a fair number who 'just don't get it'

However it does seem strange, that so many poc would vote for a known racist ??

But then is it any more incomprehensible than all those women who voted for 'proud misogynist' Trump.

BTW you can't claim ownership of all the idiots.

There are a few sprinkled across the rest of the world y know.

Robust yes but does it have to be so overwhelming huge ?
