Just got an old bike, out of storage its a 2008 viking its a spare bike, just fixed it up today. The chain keeps making a clicking noise.
Just wondered if this means the chains on its way. Not really done much distance on it and the chains not rusty any ideas what might be causing this.

The chain could be trying to move up or down a sprocket if they are not indexed correctly.

When you say "keeps makin a clicking noise" Do you mean a constant noise? That could mean that the gears arent indexing to the right place so the chain is slighlty out of line.

Or do you mean it maks a click at regular intervals, that could be a stiff link as it goes through the bends, probably around the jockey wheels.

Good questions, Paul.

The frequency (does it happen when you are pedalling?) could also help remote-diagnosis as it could also be some movement in the bottom bracket or the saddle not being properly tightened... ooo, I we all love clicking noises.

First guess would be the gears are out of alignment, though.

As others have said stick link(s) or indexing needs adjusting.

To check for stick link(s) turn bike upside down and rotate pedals slowly. Look at rear mech. If you see it skip you have found the (a) stiff link. Take hole of either side of the chain and wiggle it and 90 degrees to the bike. Then oil and wipe the chain. Try again. repeat until chain runs smoothly.

If indexing is out the chain will not move from one cog to the next when the shifter is moved once. The cable will need to be re-tensioned either from the mech itself or the barrel adjusters. There are many on-line guides to show you how to do this.

If it happens less often that one revolution of the pedals it'll be a frozen link. try back pedalling as you watch the chain go through the rear mech and you'll see it.
