Ok this may or may not be cycle related but either way looking for some input on this one.

I cycle commute daily - between 25-40km round trip depending on route. Have done for a couple of years. I played footy last Thursday at work (I'm a teacher) which I haven't done for a couple of years and had some tight muscles in thighs and calves that night and next day, I had cycled in as normal the next day but with no real problem. Now on the Friday night I started to get a strong pain just below one knee - where the top of the shin meets the kneecap. So bad I couln't really sleep much. Saturday morning I notice a large red bruised area around there and it was warm/hot. I limped a bit but could get by. During the day though he red bruising/hot area extended all down the front of my shin to the ankle. All the area was painful to touch- the pain fairly equal all over too...Forward to today wednesday and although it has eased a bit - it's still painful and red from knee to ankle. I drove to work so far this week figuring it best to rest it no matter. Now I should probably go get it checked I know but hey I'm a bloke eh! Some of my coworkers joked I could have been bitten by a spider of centipede in the night (there are poisonous critters here where I am) and I'm wondering if they might be right as I've never had or seen this kind of thing before!

Any ideas on what is going on here - Anyone had anything similar?

Sorry, no idea what you have, but I have never heard of these kind of symptoms being cycle related.
I would get medical advice before anything gets worse/permanent.

I doubt its anything to do with the bike (especially if you haven't changed anything on that front), more likely the football. When I played a few games a few year ago for rhe first time in about 15 years I woke up with pains in my shins in the areas you describe but not as severe and it receded the next day. I can really only suggest that you may need to see a doc to get a proper diagnosis/ treatment.

thank you all for your comments. I went toi a specialist over the weekend and it seems Chris' diagnosis is correct. I had an MRI which showed some tears in the tendon there. It is still swollen where the knee joins the shin though the pain is much less severe now it is still sore. Doc reckons a few weeks rest and should fix itself...
