I have both a proper engineering stethescope and a comfortable screwdriver that I use for the same purpose.
As an electrician I used to use the screwdriver to listen to immersion heaters to check if they were working. I also listen to pipes to check flow. I always use one to check bearings in motors and shafts.
It is amazing what a 'good ear' can determine.
