New baby girl soon...

I/we are about to have a daughter within the next few weeks but are stuck for a name. Of course, we have a few ideas, but... well... you know - we're not wholly convinced.

Inspired by the 'new puppy' thread and the barrage of sensible names offered there i've thought of throwing the naming debate open to the general CC public. The poor child is going to be half english/half norwegian, but doesn't necessarily have to be called after a Tolkien creation. The parent's religious affiliation veer towards the christian, but more out of habit than true conviction, though one of them is tittilated by the far eastern philosophies. Nothing fancy or modern - in fact, quite the opposite, perhaps.

All suggestions will be written on a piece of paper, folded, and put into a hat. The winner will be drawn and announced... and then we'll see.

When we were having our first child the scan was done and they said it will be a girl. We therefore prepared for this by choosing names and clothes for a baby girl but when the birth day arrived it was a boy. That was 21 years ago and HE is now a fully grown and healthy man. So go ahead with your name choosing but have some male ones as well just in case.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I would avoid any name associated with a current celebrity. We are not religious, but we looked at the names of Christian saints. Steady names, most of which can be abbreviated to something more cool if your child wishes as they evolve. Here's a list....

Most important is NOT to try to be original. Your daughter won't thank you for giving her the tedious burden of having to reply to the question.."How do you spell that?" for the rest of her life.

We chose Catherine. We have always called her Kitty.

For the first week or two, the father simply referred to her as 'Little Sh*te' until she was named..... Freya.
Unfortunately, giving their second name, I don't think Freya was the best of choices, but, hey, who am I to judge?

I've never had the opportunity to name a girl, but I like Grace.

PS Just logged into the font of all wisdom that is Twitter and seen Bernhard Eisel and his lovely wife Tanja have had a baby girl called... Freja!

I'm probably not the best person to ask as I like the less common names, I came across a new one recently.... Gwenllan (not sure about the exact spelling) but sounds beautiful with a welsh accent! What ever name you choose, think about how it could be shortened, even if you don't quite often school friends will, and how it sounds if you need to shout it out in the supermarket as they are about to seen an entire display of tins rolling!
