I'm looking to buy a new bike specifically for commuting.

Needs to come in a 15" or 16" frame. Maximum budget is £270.
Also needs to be good for climbing hills. Want to add a pannier.

I have a womens Giant road bike which I can cycle to work on in 14 mins, think its about 6 miles. Quickest I can make it home is 34 mins. (uphill all the way)

Tried it on mountain bike with slicks but its not great.

Looking at flat bar hybrids with tougher wheels as the road surface is horrendous. xx(

Currently looks at these:

Any thoughts?

Personally I like the look of the ridgeback, but then it is much more expensive than the others.

I like Giants because their frame geometry suits me, plus you get a lot of bike for your money ... very solidly built.

You need to sit on a few makes to see which suits your body geometry best - which feels most comfortable.

How much do you have to spend?

If you have the money, I can highly recommend a Giant FCR C: http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/12285/Giant_FCR_C_Bike_2007

If you have a little less money, this bike looks the dog's nads for the price: http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/19032/Giant_FCR_4_Womens_Bike_2009

But I would say that if you go for Giant ... change the tyres asap! Their bikes are great, but the stock tyres are crap!

Think that looks very like my road bike but with flat bars - giant scr I have I think, just can't ride it with a rucksack on!

For some reason the ridgeback page doesnt link properly, it wasn't the £599 one, its the comet from the right hand side.

If you like your road bike, why not just change the dropped bars for flat bars? It will push you more upright, so your rucksack sits in a more comfortable position. You could even fit MTB riser bars if you want to go even more upright. Just don't get DH bars, they weigh a tonne!
