Just wondered if it was possible to use 'normal' brake levers and index shifters with the Northroad style of handlebar, and would appreciate any opinions on their use for touring and commuting.
Cheers

It is depending on which bars you get, road(drop bar) controls normally fit a bar diameter of 23.8mm and MTB 22.2mm. So you can run road controls on things like the Nitto Moustache bar as standard, they can also be run on a 22.2mm bar but would need a shim of some sort.

For road combi brake & gear levers, STI/Ergo, the the Nitto Moustache is a good example. It's effectively a drop bar with the drops splayed out flat to the sides. The controls are normally setup on the bends, as per normal drop bars, and so you have your 'hoods' position sideways on and the bends/corners as your two main points for accessing the controls.

North Road bars generally sweep back so, controls on sides, means you redcue reach and may need a longer stem. Moustache style(or road curvy bars) normally sweep forward first and can actually mean a longer reach, thus shorter stem required.

Good list of curvy bars here:-

You could also look at some of my posts and my albums to see/read ideas on bars and controls.

Thanks MacB. Apologies for not replying earlier. Bit arrogant of me to assume normal brake levers and gear shifters meant MTB / hybrid ones as opposed to road ones! Had no idea that different styles of handlebar had different diameters. Nice pics from your link, and the link to Sheldon Brown extremely useful. Thanks a lot
