I have the decorators in. I am having my lounge and bedroom done, walls and all paint work.
I live in a smallish flat and can't escape the horrible smell.
Wouldn't you think that with all our modern technology someone would invent a good paint that doesn't have such a horrible closing stink.
NB
They have to use oil based paint as against water based.

Are they using the new water based stuff? The pong is relatively minor and short lived.

Because oil-based paints require the solvent to do one once applied in order for the paint to dry... in which case it has to be volatile - hence it smells.

If you "bump" it you will definitely regret it

For woodwork I've found Bedec multisurface to be very good - as said above, surface needs to be prepared ie rubbed down, cleaned with tack rag.
Using satin White Bedec, I covered a dark blue gloss with 2 coats - very impressive!

You can use water based products over oil based products providing you prepare the surface correctly and use the correct primer

The decorator told that was possible but it often fails within weeks ie starts coming away so he wouldn't do it unless I insisted and took responsibility.
