.......doesn't work.

Driving home from sis in laws on an A road, saw a bike in the wet 1/2 a mile away, cars passing without moving out. I got to it, indicated, moved over onto the other side of the road to pass (rule 170 & wet spray from my car to think of). ALL the cars behind me that I could see) stayed where they were, despite my road positioning telling them I was passing something.

I am guessing that their thoughts were, "Look at that idiot overtaking like that, why should I give the cyclist room?"

What other excuse is there for barrelling past at 60 in the wet with 2-3 feet gap? (nothing coming in the opposite direction BTW)

The cyclist will have appreciated your considerate driving though of course, the motons probably wouldn't have noticed - too busy on the phone, picking nose, chucking litter out of window etc etc.........

We can only commend you for sensible driving, but you can't make the nutters follow suit I'm afraid.

This reminds me of a non-cycle related incident a few years ago. We were driving along and came upon a few cars stopped for no apparent reason. My hubby pulled up and I got out for a nosey - there was a mother duck leading her brood across the road! I heard a car behind and looked back to see a 4x4 tonning along so I stood in the road and waved my arms - he took no notice and over-took the row of standing cars, so mowing down a family of ducks in the process. It was awful.

Just goes to show that you can't get the safe-driving message through to some people, no matter how hard you try to set a good example.

Also as my own car may obscure the view of the bike I always indicate right to show I am going around the bike. Even if the following cars actually give the bike some room they never indicate what they are doing.

Sadly they seem to give more consideration to a dog than a cyclist.

I always pass by cyclists in this way when in the car/on m/cycle in the hope those following will do the same. Does happen sometimes

Likewise. Unfortunately not all will follow suit. I just console myself with the fact i did the right thing...and just maybe it does rub off once in a while.

Good idea for a petition, but rule 163 of the highway code already covers it:

Straight due care and attention I think?

Hmmm. I think we had this discussion on commuting and a lot of the literalists on there were of the very conservative reading that dot 9 of rule 163 meant as little as possible, so I don't think there's much hope of motorists agreeing on that one .

Don't see the point in risking it myself in poor conditions. Too much to go wrong.
