People with bikes on the back of their cars..

Not being snobby about the practice of carrying bikes out somewhere - I do it myself often - trouble with Sheffield is you've got to climb out of the city before you get anywhere.

Impatience and close passing is surely unforgiveable from such people...drove over to Cheshire to go walking around goyt valley and shining tor today (not very shining, fog and icy sleet) but there were a fair few bikes out on the road.

Everyone seemed fairly well-behaved and patient apart from the prat in front of me in the Mazda with 4 bikes hung on the back who insisted on squeezing by a bike and oncoming traffic - close enough even without a bike wheel protruding from the side.

No excuse for cyclists to be driving like this at all (obviously never rides on the road and considers bikes toys to play off-road exclusively)

There are various more, snobby if you like, theories that some of these carriers with stuff for the kids/other people are only very occasional cyclists and don't think like "us".

How often have I seen people driving a car, alone, yet with the bike on the roof or a boot rack. Does it never occur to them that the bike would be safer dismantled in the boot?

TBH I think there's something trophy-like about a bike on obvious display.

I guess it's possible that these folk would never have ridden a bicycle on the road though.

They might even regard road riding as an aberation - they take their bike to a dedicated, off road, recreational location for their cycling, after all.

Indeed, although amusingly enough this topic was a bone of contention for a while in local cycling politics with regards the CTC.

What's wrong with putting the bikes on the back of the car - we are a family of 5 so we can't put them all in the inside. Ours is mounted on a tow-bar complete with numberplate and light board (with one inside the car). Actually I quite like seeing bikes on cars - gives me something to look and see what they have got, and to wonder if they are going anywhere nice with their bikes.

It's not the carrying them, it's the driving badly with them on... One expects a cyclist to think about other cyclists - although of course many cyclists are just as dim as any other class of road user...

I think Globalti was refering to when there's only one person in the car, and they could fit the bike in. Less chance of damage, and better aerodynamically.

Dismantled means wheels off. They need to be carried in the boot as well. And maybe luggage. Things have to be stowed carefully or precious frame paintwork can get scratched !

Believe me !

One of the things that annoys me about taking the front wheel off is that you take it off and when you put it back on trying to get the brakes aligned properly you find they rub or stick is and it can be a big faff. Sometimes this mysteriously doesn't happen at all. Other people I've spoken seem to find this an even bigger problem.

If we could only get them to take the bikes off the car and try riding on the road, we could make them better drivers...

Nothing at all - a nice bike can make even the most boring car, like an Nissan Escort, or whatever they're called, far more interesting.

my road bike doesn't fit in either car (the old car is longer than the new car) with the wheels on and the guards are in the way, i try and avoid taking the rear wheel off as much as possible as it never goes in quite straight!

mountain bikes normally get put in as they are stored stripped down, so not much work there.

the new car has perminant roof bars, so thinking I might get a roof rack for bikes, but i know my brother is meant to keep his speed lower when he has bikes on his roof.
