My friend's Dawes bicycle has been sitting around gathering dust and she's decided to start using it more often. Good for her.

The tires have gone a little bit flat and need pumping up. They have presta valves, so she's duly gone to Halford's to buy a valve adaptor. One of these:

She called me to say that the adaptor won't fit on the valve, so I rode over to have a look. And, yes, it doesn't fit. The bit of the adaptor that should screw onto the valve has no thread inside.

Are we doing something wrong, or have Halford's sold her a duff adaptor? Having read some of the things written about them on here, I'm inclined to believe the latter.

I am assuming that first you have unscrewed the valve part before trying to screw the adaptor on ?

It is always possible of course that the monkeys at Halfords have sold your friend the wrong bit

I take it you are using a traditional pump such as one of these. The end to the right of the image you have linked to should have an internal thread to connect to the thread on the presta valve. If it does not have a thread it is duff.

Yes, we've unscrewed the captive nut

You're right, we're using a hand pump. The bit you mention doesn't have an internal thread, so I guess it is useless. Before I left her house I got the receipt from her, so I'll pop in tomorrow to exchange it (assuming they're not all like it) or get a refund.

Thanks for the replies.
