I took a wee ride on the loan bike I have from my LBS while my own is getting repaired.

I was on the way back...cycle path, when all of a sudden I saw a shape approaching very fast from my left.
I heard a load 'crack' as the projectile hit my helmet.

I slowed down and had a look, but couldn't see anything (I didn't want to hang about).

I've been on the same route a few times without incident, and will take that route again...if I catch the person who did this, they will wish they didn't bother!

Hope you didn't get to much of a fright!

Lucky ye had yer helmet on really!

Ye have tae question the mentality of some of these people - if it hit yer helmet its only inches away from your eye and possible serious injury.

Hate to say it, but if you saw the approaching projectile then I very much doubt if you have been shot. Pellets from a cheapo air rifle are not visible in flight, unless some very particular light conditions are in force. Doesn't mena it wasn't unpleasant, but firearms it ain't!

Kids lobbing stones?

Sounds more likely. You wouldn't have seen an air-gun pellet coming. Could've been a catapult, I had the window of my car smashed with one of those. Was raging as I found out who did it but I couldn't do anything about it because he denied it.

This is one example I give to non-cycling friends and acquaintances who ask why cyclists always wear wrap-arounds. They protect my eyes against projectiles, both deliberate and loose road chippings. People think that's getting a bit paranoid...

Was it part of a Formula 1 racing car perhaps.
But glad to see you were not injured.

On the other foot, my veloflex's when fully pumped up can really ping a stone which in one instance succeeded in giving a walker a bit of a fright as the pebble hit the tree just in front of her with an almighty crack
