Question about Word

I have a story that I have in Word format.

I'd like to change the names of the two main characters, is there a way of substituting new names for the existing ones without going through and editing every single piece of text in the document?

What I'm hoping for is finding a tool that will let me say replace every 'x' with 'y' in the whole document.

Just use find & replace

Ctrl-H gives you Find and Replace. Use it carefully, though, as it will replace everything with the string that you give it. Thus, replacing "Chris" with "George" Would make "Christ" into "Georget" and "Christine" into "Georgetine".

Whenever I use it, I only do the replacements one at a time rather than using "Replace All".
