Hi all!
I want to change the current 8 speed cassette on my hard tail for a nine speed. I've got new shifters but wondered if I need to change the rear dérailleur. The current one is shimano alivio. And will I need to fit a wider hub/axle thingy???

Maybe. Whatyou need to do is establish what the max/min size gear the shifter will accept. It will cover 9 gears physically but whether it will handle the 30/32/however many big ring is another question.

You then need to know how wide a 9 spd is in relation toan 8 so you can decide whether you need a new wheel.

You will also need a new chain, but you will be doing this anyway. 9 spd chains cost more.

Finally, ask yourself - is it really worth it? If what you now have is worn out, now is a good time, if you want to make the change. Otherwise you may think otherwise.

If you are going for a like for like cassette ratio cage length will not be an issue. A nine speed shimano cassette will fit an 8 speed hub freewheel.
