i have done some of it but not the bit up the west side as there be dragons so a good route through Manchester and a nice camp sight around the top of Manchester, any one?

Theres a Camping and Caravan club campsite at Crowden on the Penine Way that I've stopped at, but thats only 26 miles into your route.
I headed more east of your route, Going up to Todmorton before pulling over to Camping and Caravan site at Clitheroe.
But if you go Stalybrigde -> Oldham then northwestward there's a scout campsite at Ashworth just west of Rochdale, the Ashworth Valley Scout Camp.
Its ~25 miles from Crowden.
I was thinking of staying there on my trip north this summer, but never did.
