...how come the carbon & allloy bikes seem to have much more eye catching colour schemes than the steel ones?

I was looking at the Thorn audax m3 which comes in blue red or green...seems like a pretty dull looking bike to me...

...I am not debating the quality of the material at all, in fact I'd like a flash looking steel framed bike....why does steel seem to go hand in hand with 'boring to look at'?

;)

could it just be that the thinner tubing doesn't catch the eye so easily?

Bloody hell BTFB.

You've not seen the new Colnago steel frame then? That thing is beautiful. Or the Bianchi Dolomiti, for that matter...

I'd get bored just looking at any bike for more than a few seconds. The appeal of a bike to me is not in how it looks.

The Thorn Audax MK3 has a simple paint job to keep the price down. Same with some of their other lower priced bikes. The Cyclosportive and 853 Audax have more lively paintjobs (I quite like the 853's blue/red but it's not everybodies taste).
There are many steelies out there with good paint jobs.
