Hello, Hope I am in the right place to ask this: I am looking to buy a bike for less than £600. I love the look/comfort factor of the 'classic' types such as the Pashley Sovereign, but I would also like to be able to bike to the North York Moors: about 60 miles there, camping and 6o miles back. Obviously three gears wouldn't really cut it! Realistically, I guess the town bike styling might not be applicable - so something 'plain and simple' looking would be OK. So, can anyone recommend anything that is: reliable, 'plain' or 'classic' looking, comfortable, yet capable of taking on a few hills (not too many cos I don't go far into the moors) - or am I asking for the moon on a stick! Advice gratefully appreciated. Thanks, Damian.

what about the trek fx 7.3
slightly wider than road tyres but fast, comfy and classical look, especially with panniers and mudguards!

Check out the Kona Dew range. Discounts to be had on the 2009 models at the moment on the Evans and CyclesUK shops. Like the Trek it's a hybrid.

Also check out cyclocross-style bikes and tourers if you don't mind drop handlebars. Should be a good bet for that sort of distance. They should come with all the pannier kit etc. They might get a bit pricey though. Drop handlebars might be better for long distances as you get more positions to put your hands. Alternatively, get some 'bar ends' if you go for flat handlebars - which will give you more options.

Cheers for the replies people. The handle bar tip is great - something that I would not have thought of, but potentially leading to lots of discomfort. I would prefer not to have drop bars, so I will get the bar ends.
