I need (well, technically want, but I know everyone here will understand) something that I can use to keep up with the TdF on the go. It needs to be pretty cheap, so I can't stretch to an iPad.

Sorry, I know you cant stretch but I borrowed the wife's iPad to catch up with the Dauphiné and now the tour of Switzerland and streaming is not only a doddle but the battery life is great.

I have used a handful of android based tablets and they are pretty clunky in comparison and usually have terrible battery life. We used argos on the store card opting for the buy now pay in 10 months which makes it manageable. The only other tech that would sway my decision would be the new asus transformer prime which is around the same price. You pay peanuts.. I'm afraid.

To be honest, I wouldn't get an iPad anyway, even if I could afford it (was only using it as an example of what I couldn't afford). I'm not into the whole Apple thing - don't have an iPod, iPhone, etc. I've also seen plenty of people who say Android tablets are better (as well as those who prefer iPads), so I guess a lot of it comes down to your personal bias.

Based on the reviews and other replies I've had here, I think I'll give it a try.

I enjoy using my Galaxy Tab 8.9 which I bought from Currys on the recommendation of phil_hg_uk's glowing review of his which he bought on the glowing review of another CycleChatter!

They seem to have sold all the 8.9 inch models but they now have the 7 inch on special offer at £219.99. I like the extra screen size of the 8.9 for my old eyes, but the 7 inch is more portable and has Android 4.0 which means that it should run the Eurosport Player app to give access to loads of sports including all the big cycle races. (There is a monthly subscription to pay and - extremely annoyingly - you can't log in with your PC account credentials; Eurosport expect you to take out a second subscription!)

I think you may have misunderstood lulubel. I own a few android based gadgets, most recently my Galaxy S2 and two tablets we bought for the MIL (which both got returned due to failure). All my smart phones have been good experiences, however I'm not so convinced by the tablets. If you have "seen" plenty that are better then your mind has already been made on this - go buy one.

Sounds like it could be!

I'd been waiting for the Android Eurosport Player app and then when it finally appears, they try and screw a second sub. out of me. No way am I going to pay twice for the same thing!

(My Galaxy Tab currently doesn't support the app anyway, but I assume that it will be updated eventually to Android 4.0 which does.)

Sorry, I didn''t mean "your" bias as in you personally, but as in people in general tend to be biased one way or the other about things. I know people who have iPads and wouldn't touch an Android tablet with a barge pole, and people who have Android tablets and feel the same way about iPads. I've never even handled one, so I don't have a clue one way or the other. I just don't like the way Apple make it so difficult to use anything that isn't part of their brand once you've got one of their devices. I don't like Macs for that reason.

If I had the money, I would probably buy something like a Motorola Xoom - I've had good experiences of Motorola phones, so it is mostly about brand loyalty - but I can't justify paying much more than £100 for something that's going to be essentially a toy.

We're lucky in that respect because we don't pay any extra for Eurosport on our Sky subscription. We've been on the same package for the best part of 10 years, I think, so it must have been part of our package when we set it up.

No, what I am saying is that I have a subscription for Eurosport on my PC but if I want to watch the coverage on Android devices, then I need to pay for a second sub. If I want to watch on TV via cable or satellite then I need to pay a 3rd time!

There should be one account per customer which works on all of the Eurosport services.

If you get your TV through Sky, you can log into your account and watch any channels covered by your subscription on Skyplayer. That's what I do if I want to watch TV on my laptop.

I don't know if there'a an Android app for Sky yet, but I know there is for ITV, so I'm hoping ITV2 will be covering the TdF again this year. Otherwise, I'll just have to pay for Eurosport on Android and cancel it again afterwards.

I forgot Sky Player. I don't use Sky so it doesn't apply to me.

My gripe is that they treat phone/tablet subscriptions as completely separate to PC subs. Sometimes it suits me to use my laptop, and at others I want to use my Galaxy Tab. I would not be using both at once so I don't want to pay twice. They should tie the subscription to the person, not the family of devices it is going to be used on.
