Whilst watching on tv today [Eurosport] I noticed some of the bikes had something fixed to the bottom nearside rear stay. At first I thought it was the cadence sensor but then noticed they were set back away from the pedal arc.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what they are?

Possibly sensors to help in sprint finishes by giving accurate timings to the n'th of a second.

Chip, to ensure all riders are recorded at finishes. Photo finish does the placings, and a timer on the print shows gaps, just in case the one second gap appears in a splitting peloton and a "new" time (for GC purposes) appears. Pretty standard in most big races now, and in Nederland almost all races use them. I guess it will spread everywhere eventually. Something else for organisers to worry about!
