Big Congrats to Beth Tweddle for winning Gold in the Floor at the World Gymnastic Championships today!

Whilst it will barely get a mention at SPOTY this year, it's a phenomanaly great achievement that rivals the recent success of UK cycling. In my youth I was a Gymnast and recall watching endless Olympics and Worlds where team GB might as well not bothered getting on the coach (appreciating that the world was a different place with the Eastern Block etc).
I hope Beth Tweddle will inspire other budding gymnasts to raise their game and be the best. It's a great sport, I hope it can rise like Cycling on the back of this.

BTW, the Dome's a great looking venue and will be great in 2012.

Fab stuff!

She was already World and European Champion on the Asymetric bars, but I don't know if she was the first British World Champion, I suspect she is in the modern era certainly.

Well done indeed :girl:

Did she win on the bars as well?

Gymnastics is amazing - the floor thing is my least favourite but the rest is spectacular. We were lucky to get tickets for an evening of strength, bravery, control and timing at the Commonwealth Games and it was a superb night out.

What was your speciality FF?

Pommel Horse, came 4th in the Devon Championships, my one and only competition!
Loved the rings and vaulting, hated the high bar, liked the floor, had difficulties with the parallel bars as they were so wide, and I was soo narrow! Many years of enjoyment.
I'm in awe of the performances you see today. The womens beam is amazing gutsy stuff. I once tried the women's asymetric bars and that's chuffing hard too.

She's from Bunbury which is close to Peckforton which is where the sandstone statue of an elephant & castle is in someones front garden -definitely worth a look if you are ever that way

Having said that, there are many many Chinese/Koreans that are naturally very tiny. I work with a Malaysian girl who when we're travelling together is often mistaken for a child and she's nearly 30! Examples being asked not to sit next to the Emergency Exit on planes LOL!

We watched - well done Beth! Did you see the Columbian girl's fall? Looked nasty.

Yes I did, it looked unpleasant and the fact that there was no instant replay suggests that when the BBC relooked at the incident it looked pretty bad (although one assumes that they took the likely age of many of the potential audience into account also).
I've not caught-up with her injuries but pray she makes a full recovery.
