Last time I was in Comet the shop asistant told me that the Samsung fridge was more expensive than the Zanussi one because it's a more well-known white goods brand.

No, they don't - there are no assets to strip.

Rover was very different. The taxpayer was ripped off because politicians interfered - a substantial offer from Jon Moulton's Alechemy Group was turned down on the ground that it only guaranteed most of the jobs (in a marginal Labour constituency); and guess what, HMG's preferred bidder resulted in all the jobs being lost along with the factory.
