There was a thread in News and Current Affairs about prurience and prejudice but now it's gone. What happened to it?

The Mods said it had prompted a tsunami of reports so they closed it until they could review and clean it up.

I wasn't aware they had removed it.

I have no idea what the reports related to. I could speculate, but discussion of moderation is disapproved of, so I am content to wait and see, with some interest, what the outcome is.

A note in place of the thread from the mods would have been nice.

"Review and clean-up" = disappears without trace. I've yet to see one of those threads re-appear.

That would be a shame. Not for the loss of the subject matter - @theclaud and I, the main two substantive contributors at the point of closure, are perfectly able to discuss these issues elsewhere if we want - but because it would imply a kind of mob censorship - make enough complaints and you get a thread that you don't like deleted.

As I said, I've no knowledge of what the complaints were so I don't know who or why would benefitfrom this - I just think it's wrong on principle to be able to stop perfectly valid threads.

There were some posts having a dig at other posters with no contribution to the conversation. I can understand that if a thread gets overwhelmed with reports then the mods will take it away to give them a chance to deal with it and prevent it becoming worse and irrepairable. It is Sunday after all and we shouldn't expect a bunch of volunteers to stop what they're doing to fix things.

    Spooky.

As a party in that thread i almost mentioned orwell.

As a fan of his thoughts on language.

But now "orwellian" comes to mind.

I hope I can find my way home tonight.

    Perhaps I imagined my house/bed.

Edit - i have never ever reported or complained about a thread.

    Nor have anyone on ignore.

Don,'t believe in that sort of thing.

And this affair is yet another reason I am glad I don't use a smartphone.

Oh, I agree - I've got no problem with temporary removal. If someone tells them there is offensive content, temporary removal pending review is responsible. It was Brandane's foreboding of permanent disappearance that I was feeling would be a shame.

Well something labelled prurience would be about sex.

Unless serious serious repression was in play.

srw It's a bit more complicated than that...

I agree. I have no problems with temporary removal, but a placeholder note seems a basic courtesy. Actually, I have no problems with permanent removal if the complications prove too intractable, but again a note explaining the grounds and describing the issue wiulw be more useful, and kind, than a hole.
