It is:
A) an expensive Audax.
B) an Audax with no cake.
C) an Audax for people who can't follow maps.

European sportives are of high standard involving closed roads, where a rider can expect a superb day. Sadly this is not the case in the UK. UK sportives are highly variable from those that provide good value for money to utter rip-offs. As this form event has become more popular for good reason, it has also generated a number of commercial and charities planning events that masquerade as sportives. So it is a bit of a lottery really. If you are planning upon entering a sportive then it is best to find out about is reputation in past years.

In the UK, the only benchmarked event where the standards are prescribed come in the form of audaxes. However, audaxes are low budget affairs and do not come with the extras such as waymarked routes or personal timing. The upside is that you will have low expectations which are bound to be exceeded.

Fantastic. Any recommendations?

I had thought about entering the sportive that toured around Ireland over three or four days. Is it still going?

I know there is this one http://www.racearoundireland.com/ but it seems a little hardcore. There's a nice 135km on the 7th of August.

And they do a nice BBQ afterwards too.
