What Material Could I Use For Helmet Pads?

Stupidly I bought a Boardman road cycle helmet from Halfords around a year and a half ago. The pads started to smell so I hand washed them a couple of times, this caused the front one to fall to pieces and now I have big red marks on my forehead. The pads simply stick to velcro pads incorporated into the inside of the helmet. After emailing Halfords they do not stock any parts for this helmet. Pretty pathetic considering that they still sell it, and it is a medium priced helmet (£60). Needless to say my next helmet will be from a well known brand. Any ideas please as I am too skint to replace it.
