With cycling being alledgedly popular because of Mr Wiggins and his ilk how come bike manufacturers never advertise their wares on tv like what car makers do? I think they are missing a trick...am i daft thinking this?

Think about other popular sports and hobbies, such as golf, fishing, model making, they don't waste money on mass market adverts, they target the specific market they want to attract.

Probably just the size of the market. Cycling might be popular, but I would imagine the market for £2k bikes is still pretty damn small.

I do a lot of fishing - there are plenty of famous names that most on here won't have even heard of, like Daiwa, Abu Garcia, Preston and Shimano.

Err, scrub that last one...

Wiggo is on now promoting rugby ... But your right ... Look at Golf .... You see more toothpaste and toilet roll adverts than golf club adverts

I've seen much more cycling on free-to-air TV recently in the UK. Often the programmes are sponsored by cycle suppliers and bike manufacturers. Chain Reaction Cycles and Genesis have recently been involved as programme sponsors and there must be others. Wiggle adverts are timed for whenever cycling programmes are on TV. The logic is probably that people who watch cycling probably cycle, and people who cycle probably spend money on their cycling. Probably ^_^

So there is niche advertising. I wonder who is big enough to advertise generally. Halfords might be but bikes for them represent little more than a niche in their business model.

Loved last years Spesh TV advert

They do simply by having their brand shown on bikes at bike events.

Then of course you get Halfords ads flogging bikes all the time.

That makes sense in a way as if you advertise you need a decent share of the market anyway and so Halfords advert will take people to Halfords but say a Bianchi advert will not particularly persuade you to buy a Bianchi. I think makers accept they do not have a unique selling point and we are not brand loyal.

That's Italians for you - it's difficult to make more than one thing if you walk around with your hand on your nob all day.
