Hi. I was thinking of getting a cheap mountain bike for winter use( riding to work/going to the shops and so on), and keeping the road bike for for spring, summer and autumn use.

Sometime when you just want to ride on the bike(say just to pop to the shops) I get a bit paranoid leaving the road bike anywhere(some of these bike locks weight a fair bit to be carrying around)

How many on here have more than one bike, like one for best and one for general every day use.

I have a fixed which I use for commuting and in the winter I use it for all my rides, the geared bike gets put away at the end of October when the clocks change and doesn't get used again till the spring. I also have an old dawes that stays on the turbo.

Many people on this forum have multiple bicycles. I do. But do not take that as a sign that such people are normal or that all is well.

I and others like me are probably slightly daffy - and even if not we will make a good pinch hitter until a daffy guy comes along.

A second bicycle is fine if you have the storage space.

But I wouldn't buy a cheap, new MTB. I'd go older and (if not for off-road use) I'd do without suspension. In fact for a hack, I'd do without anything not absolutely necessary.

Go secondhand and go unsexy, but go for quality and simplicity. Early, rigid MTB by Kona, Marin and similar. Or a shopping bike. Single chainring to keep it simple. Scruffy paint.

Bizarrely, if you get it so simple as to have only one gear, the price a vendor wants will increase. That's fashion.

Good luck and have fun.

My stable:

Carrera Virtuoso - Road bike, used for long rides in all weathers
Revolution Courier Race - Hybrid, used for commuting in all weather
Ridgeback MX25 - MTB, err...hanging on the garage wall without cables

My ideal stable:

Nice road bike for use in dry weather
Slightly less nice road bike with mudguards for use in bad weather
Fixie for commuting
MTB for arsing about on

Anyone want to lend me a few grand?

I only have 2 at the moment; a Cannondale Sreet Ultra Ute bike and my Birdy folder; due to a dope of a son having had my nice CX & beater of a MTB nicked within weeks of each other this year.

I'm looking round for a cheap old drop bar roadie/audax to replace my CX for days when I just want a quick blast to work or to go and play up and down all day in the hills.
An MTB would be nice too but I've nowhere to put it for the limited use it'd get.

A while back I was down to one bike (Trek 7.3FX) having sold most of my stable. Then I found that the disc fouled the trailer hitch making it impossible to tow my trailer. I then needed to buy an old Giant mountain bike frame off Fleabay to build up using spares from my shed so I would have a bike to tow my trailer. So I am back up to two bikes. Then we decided to get my wife a bike she can ride and at present she has a Raleigh 20, so we are now back to where I started with 3 bikes.

After an accident towing and writing off the trailer hitch I replaced the hitch with a better system that doesn't have a huge clamp and handwheel. I could tow now using my Trek and offload the MTB, but the MTB is handy to go to the shops or town as I wouldn't be too upset if it got nicked but should a roadbike come along the MTB may have to go because of space.

I have 3

Giant Defy 2 (2010) summer roadie
Trek 7500 Hybrid - Winter and commuter and all rounder
Trek 6500 MTB - When i want to go and play in the woods.

The 7500 hybrid may have to go (space reasons) and the MTB will be the all rounder.
