For those looking for something a bit different to do this weekend,, the Wydean rally is on tomorrow
Starting off at Chepstow racecourse from 8am and winding through the forest with roughly 180 rally cars taking part.

Best viewing points will be around Speech house nr Coleford, it will go on the for the whole day. . Viewing is free but they charge £5 for a car parking pass which can be used in any of them.

Incidentally, Speech House is only a couple of miles from the http://www.pedalabikeaway.co.uk/ cycling centre which has some great trails through the forest if you want to combine a day out with a bit of off road fun...bike hire from there if you were driving a distance or not able to carry your bike.

Edit, have just been told that a lot of the trails will be shut for safety reasons...I guess they don't want to take any chances with the cars flying around

Typical. I was in Coleford today (catching up with family) but am back in Salop now so won't be able to see this.

Looks like it was a good day out! Would have cycled up there if I wasn't busy on Saturday. Shame the trails were shut though as taking a break to watch the rally between trails would have been great fun.

I ended up busing 7 people up there in the end. If you had been watching that bit, you would have been cycling home in the dark. Lovely part of the world though

I have enough lighting power for ~800 lumens lasting around 2 hours which would be plenty, although my navigating skills in the dark coming back from the forest probably wouldn't be tip-top.

You're right about lovely part of the world, love taking the mountain bike up there. You should try your Cannondale on the Verderers trail at Pedalabikeaway if you haven't already, great fun and suited to all skill levels.

There was one trail I saw up there which gave a warning about the dangers of using this particular trail. It didn't look so bad, and a lot less challenging than Daisybank.
I've got the knobblies on the Cannondale so I'll probably take it down there one weekend

I guess that would be one of the DH trails? I don't recall any warnings like that on the Verderers (blue) or Freeminers (red) when I was there a few weekends ago, although there were a few warning notices up about new/changed sections of trail to prevent people bombing through them expecting it to be the same as last time.

None of the XC trails are too challenging, there are jumps on the Verderers that new riders can just roll over, or more experienced riders can pick up some speed and lift off. The Freeminers is a bit root-y and a few short more technical climbs but nothing over the top. Definitely worth a day up there though, especially if you get some nice weather.
