Youtube comments... Worth it?

After some recent comments on youtube (in response to helmet cam footage), I'm wondering whether allowing comments there is in any way worth it.

For example 'xdmasson' here:

Of course 'chaeebanks' (threatening comments) here:

And one from 'dixiestopper' here:

Is there really any advantage to allowing comments on youtube videos? Does any good ever come out of discussion there?

When you go public on YouTube you open yourself up to comments from all kinds of nutters.

Not having a YouTube account, I guess it's not possible to filter out comments you don't want to display, right?

I let 'em post but don't read 'em. Life is too short. Like I said in another post on cams, I'm being more selective about what goes up on Youtube these days.

Oh, you can filter, you can delete... But that always seems rather to be missing the purpose. Either you're opening up to criticism and discussion, or you're not; and as the criticism tends to be repetetice and cliched (and usually irrelevent) and the discussion so limited that it doesn't go anywhere... I dunno, I think it may be better to include a link to a better discussion place (such as here) and simply tick the 'no comments' box on youtube.

I've had my fair share of bad responses including death threats. However, I still allow responses, although I filter them first.

One of the big reasons I put my videos online is to foster debate, so it would defeat the purpose for me. By filtering the comments before they are published I can still allow those who disagree with me to post, but delete the posts which are there to purely threaten or insult (although I do leave some there so that others can see what I receive).

I have had a lot of good comments as well as bad and I have changed how I cycle because of some of the reasonable comments made.

The abuse doesn't bother me any more. Ducks backs and all....

I do take advice on board, but I've yet to have any on youtube that were 'good advice', unlike here where I've often ended up going off and thinking about how I ride. You've had comments on youtube (rather than elsewhere) that caused you to change how you ride?

Yes, I can't remember exactly who made the comments but it was regarding my video where I overtook when there were oncoming cars. It was comments on youtube that made me change my overtaking technique. It does happen.

I've also had quite a few people messaging me on youtube, saying thanks for posting the videos, asking for advice etc. I usually point them over here.

I also delete some of the more stupid and rude posts, and usually ban the user too. Reasonable and relatively polite debate is always allowed though.

I do what mag' does and i have to approve them first. Not had anything negative yet. Some of your clips are well close and dangerous!

Hmmm... I'd rather delete the dubious ones than approve posts before appearing, I think. I'll start doing that. Ta.

Not convinced anything positive is likely to come from youtube comments, but I'll keep an open mind.
