Certainly up to and including WW2, all British Army officers up to the rank of Lt. Col. had to be proficient riders of motor cycles.

If it was true then how could somebody reach or exceed the rank of Lt. Col. without being a proficient rider of a motor cycle? Progression through the officer ranks was linear.

On the simple basis that if you started as a 2nd. Lieutenant, it was obligatory, so rising through the h'officer ranks to Lt. Col., job done.
So if you won a commission as an other ranks / NCO and had a stellar rise straight to Lt. Col., you'd probably skip the requirement - !
Also such powerful h'officers as Lt. Col.s had dispatch riders to do the mundane stuff for them - !
