so am re-importing all my cd's lossless.
Time-consuming but it's worth it for the great improvement in sound quality.
Ditched the crappy Apple headphones ages ago.

I think Betty means without compression and loss of data from the original recording.
Is that setting in iTunes?

I'm interested cos Ive got the 80Gb ipod and a set of Bose IE Triports - so it'd be worth upping the quality if I can.

But what file format would you use?

Ipods can't handle FLAC, and I'd be loathe to use a proprietary format and risk obsolescence.

So how big is a track - what's the bit rate - don't know much about this stuff, but 192/320kbps files sound fine to my crap hearing ! I'm no big audio buff !

800-1000 kbps.
Not necessary for Status Quo maybe but vast improvement when listening to classical stuff.

i cant see how any compressed file could be lossless......but i will admit, i havent bothered trying such codecs.

cause im a snob and will only use cd's etc on my stereo... mp3's are fine for earphones and work though..

I'm assuming that the music files being imported using the lossless encoder are not being compressed. Just took a random sample of file size of tracks imported and it varies, going from 25mb up.

A 'real' snob would only use vinyl ;0)

I despair about all these compressed music formats. Sound quality has been getting crappier for twenty years and no one cares :0(
