I have a small savings scheme that has a few years before maturing & should give me £2.5k or thereabouts & my plan was to have a custom made to measure touring bike, but not after a few tweeks my current tourer is pretty spot on for me, so not sure I need to go down the custom tourer route. I've just bought a carbon road bike, so not sure what i'll spend my savings on when I get them now.
Thinking about the custom route, how do you get to test ride one to see if you like it :blush:

Just a warning: even if you spend £3000,00 (5,400 $C) there is no guarantee that you won't catch the N+1 bug.
Having said that, at the moment there are sales that would get you a really really nice bike for that money. For instance BMC have fallen out of favour for some reason and they are being offered at a discount, Ridley Noah used to be top of the range but they also are reduced too, so have a good look around before you decide. IF you know exactly what you want (like the guy who bought a Mercian shown here recently) then go the custom route otherwise I would look for a £5000.00 bike reduccd to $3

I was chatting to a Spesh concept store today, as I'm planning on dropping in on wednesday to drool over the new Roubaix's, and interestingly, we touched on the S-Works Custom builds.....which although are £2600 for the Frameset alone, - he quoted me £3400 for a Custom Build with Ultegra Groupset.
Ok, perhaps the wheelset might be lead-in, but they wont be 'bad', and are easily upgraded in the future.

Not far above your £3k budget, and an S-Works would certainly feel special ?

Yes I was shown S-Works SL4 at Newbury Concept Store, Quoted the same price. Came with SRAM Force and Zipp 30 wheels. If I'd been able to my original post would have been immaterial.

I think @vickster pointed me at the Pearson before I got the Bianchi. They look amazing in fairness. A significant discount on the Bianchi made my decision, but would have been a lot closer otherwise.

This, though I'd go for Reynolds 953 Stainless custom.
Then you can dream away with whatever colour scheme, components etc. exactly as you want. Why but 'yet another plastic bike from corporate' when you can buy something far more special and individual that'll last for ever and be just as much fun?
How is your Rourke build going FF ?

Not spent much time on the thread lately so may have missed it.

A few random thoughts:
Given a budget of £3,000 a good spec Specialised or Giant or Trek would seem like a good choice, as you will get the benefit of multi-million pound R&D, development by some of the finest cyclists in the world with some of the finest teams.
However:
This may be of some use if you are going to ride it competitively, and need the extra fractions of a second. I guess that you don't fit into that category, and my thoughts are that style and individuality should therefore probably count for a bit more than marginal gains.
Hence:
De Rosa, Bianchi, Pinarello, Musseeuw, Rose bikes would be some of my first choices. Or Boardman/Genesis for flying the British flag (yes, I know they aren't built here).
Or alternatively some Titanium bling or Stainless Steel would look great.
