Down the road from my parents house was an elderly gentleman who had a small observatory in his back garden. He’d shown me and a Friend some of his equipment and at one point had us collecting spiders for him. We found out these were used to weave grids out of the webs that could be placed in front of the camera when he was photographing the stars. At the time he seemed just an eccentric. Later we were to find out he was a Pioneer of telescope technology and the the roof of his house had a fancy inovative telescope built into it. Also I recently found the above link. Not only was he a legend in the astronomical world, he also had carried out multiple cycle tours. Wish I had got to know him more at the time.
