I've never heard of coal ash being used in the garden!

A quick Google search told me it was because coal ash also contains a great deal of other elements, such as cobalt, boron, and arsenic among others, which are toxic to plants, animals, and people. Nice!

"Old" might be the operative word here! I drew the conclusion that perhaps I was the only one old enough to remember coal scuttles.

Get a multifuel stove, you'll use a fraction ofnthe coal for more heat. Most chimneys dont need a special liner - thats just installers upping their profits.
