These are the best travel books I've read for ages, up there with
Jupiter's Travels.
He's an experienced cycle tourist -he did LE to J O'G at seventeen I think, and a China expedition, but this was bigger than anything he'd attempted before.
He set of on what I would call the old hippie trail, overland through
Europe then through the middle east and Afghanistan. Unfortunately, as
he rode through Germany a chap cycled alongside and said some
terrorists had flown planes into the WTC, so riding through
Afghanistan became a less attractive proposition, so he swung south,
rode Africa to The Cape then sailed for Soth America and rode to
Alaska, then through a Siberian winter and through China. Awesome.
It's very honestly written, he was beset by doubts and fears and
regret for a girlfriend he left behind, Sarah, but he resisted with all his
strength phoning home because he knew if he heard her voice he would
give up and use his emergency credit card to fly home (he did the
whole 46,000 miles on seven thousand pounds!)
Off topic, I was reading the second book in a cafe in the square in Krakow last week and Kristen Scott Thomas arrived en famille. She is unfeasibly
gorgeous and only lost the Best Actress Oscar because of Kate
Winslett's breasts.
Anyway, it's a great read, the first part to The Cape is called 'Moods
of Future Joys', the second, 'Thunder and Sunshine'.
What choked me is the dedication in the second book. It is:
'For Sarah, my wife, thanks for waiting!'
