I saw Pantani out training on the Costa Blanca in March 2003, and then spotted him drinking coffee with a Mercatone Uno teammate at a seaside cafe in Javea a few days later. There was some debate among my fellow riders about whether it was actually him because he looked 'different'. I told them that he'd had ear and nose jobs shortly before that and a couple of them went over and said hello to him.

I really enjoyed watching him race when I was still naive about doping so I was shocked when I found out what he'd been getting up to. Still, nobody should die the way he did. A sad waste of life and talent...
