My best bike is a Merida (Scultura 905). Love it, underrated bikes IMO due to not being a big name (at least in the UK) and not being sold at all in the US due to the links with specialized (whom Merida own 49% of).

I like the Merida bikes. A chap at work bought one, he is more than happy with it.

Lucky man! I had a Scultura 904 for a year, fantastic bike, very fast and comfortable.

I obviously exaggerate on the fast bit, as that was down to me, but was a really comfortable ride.

Both are good bikes, although the name Merida is a relatively new one, but a dependable brand. If you feel more comfortable with the Raleigh brand go for that, they produce some great value bikes. By the way, it is considered "good form" to post a link when asking these questions on here.
new? founded 1972....

Ironically given it is Merida and Raleigh listed in that link -
Merida started in 1972 and made bikes for Raleigh.

In fact the layout of the factory was based on the Raleigh factory in Nottingham!

Sadly the Raleigh factory is now student accommodation for Nottingham university.
