My son and I are doing the C2C later this year, is their a prefered way to do it.

Likely to get a tailwind going west to east but a train home is easiest.As your in Rossendale, I would start at your side and get the train back.
West to east is deemed to be easier, not least because you get the hardest bits out of the way first when you are freshest.
Once you get to Parkhead Station in Weardale - everyone stops for a cuppa there - it is downhill or flat for nearly all of the last 30 miles.
