I bought a basic cateye computer with my bike and i have been using it to commute to log my mileage. However, I went to cycle in the winter conditions the other morning and the speedo is not registering that the bike is moving.

I went and took it to the bike shop and they said that the cold conditions that we have been having will stop it from working. (Max -1C or -2C)

Has anybody else had the same problem with their speedos! Is this normal?

Thanks in advance.

I have cateyes on two of my bikes, and have not had any problems in the cold.

Check the magnet is passing close enough to the sensor. I would also try new batteries.

From a cateye instruction manual:

Troubleshooting
No display.
Is battery in the computer run down?
Replace it, and re-enter the correct information.
(All Clear a ).
Incorrect data appears.
Do all clear operation. (All Clear a ).
The sensor signal icon does not flash. (The speed is not displayed.)
[If the signal icon does not flash, reduce the distance between
the sensor and computer, adjust the position of the
magnet, and spin the wheel again. If the icon now flashes,
this indicates that the computer and sensor are too far apart
or that the battery is low.]
Is the clearance between the sensor and magnet too great?
Does the magnet pass through the sensor zone?
Adjust the positions of the magnet and sensor.
Is the computer installed at the correct angle?
Install the computer with its bottom surface facing the sensor.
Is the distance between the computer and sensor too great?
Install the sensor closer to the computer.
Is the sensor battery weak?
In cold weather, battery performance degrades.
Replace it.
Is the computer’s battery weak?
Replace it with a new one. (All Clear a ).

Cheers for the help. I must admit though I have only done about 500 miles on the bike in the 3 weeks that I have had it. Can the batteries really go in that short space of time. I know that it has been cold and when I got to work the other day after riding down a track full of snow the bike looked like an ice cube! the sensor was covered in snow. I wonder if that has buggered it!

What does (All Clear a) mean? I only have one button on my speedo.

Cheers,

If the snow was that bad around the sensor that may explain it.

Dont know what model you have but there should one or two buttons on the back. Best to look at your instruction manual. If you dont have one, you can download them just do a search for your model of computer.

A battery should not be 'flat' after only three weeks in use. However you said the computer was covered in snow and this when it melts is water and that could be the problem on the terminals of the computer. The latest cateye computer that I have on my commuter stops working when it is raining and the only solution I've found is to wrap some tape around the base of the computer to keep the water off the terminals.

I've got an old cateye and its been working fine in the cold weather, down as low as -8 last winter. Has the pickup on you fork moved, or the magnet on the wheel? As others have said if its to far from the magnet on the wheel it wont register. Has the unit on the handlebars moved on its mounting bracket? What I have always done with my computers is wrap clingfilm round the handlebar unit and hold it in place with an elastic band, its not the most elegant of solutions but it keeps the water out.

I have a cateye Velo 8 on mine and its been just fine even with the -10 we had the other night. I find a dab of vaseline helps keep the nasties off the contacts between computer and mount.
