After contributing the 'James Hunt 40' thread, I was thinking about another fantastic driver of the past;

Ari Vatanen

Absolutely incredible!!:eek:

As much as we all loved Guy Martins escapade on the Pikes Peak Hill-Climb, in the TV programme 'Speed'
This run by the Finnish legend is something else!!!

For a start the road was unpaved back then, & simply dirt/rock, & he recorded 10:47
Plus, at one point, he's driving one handed, shielding his eyes from the Sun
On that road!!!
"Chapeau!!, Ari"

Fast-forward to 2013, & Sebastian Loab had a go
On a paved road
With oxygen mask, as it's a damned high mountain
Heck!!!, the race starts at almost 10,000 feet above sea-level

Loeb recorded 8.13
With 870+BHP, against Vatanens 600BHP
Plus presumably various electronic aids, & that tarmac surface

I contest that Vatanens was a far superior feat:notworthy::notworthy:

It's almost a technology differential comparison to the Tony Pond (Rover 827 Vitesse) & Mark Higgins Imprezas, around the Isle Of Man TT circuit exhibition runs

Pond set the fastest production car time on the IOM TT course, in 1990
In 1988, he managed 37.73 miles in 22min 44 seconds.
An average speed of 99.58 mph for the whole course in a standard Rover 800 Fastback Vitesse - just with racing tyres.

This is the 1990 lap, by Pond, where he bet the 100MPH average

And;

Higgins in 2011
19:37 @ 115.3MPH (average)

Higgins in 2016
If that display is correct, & it undoubtedly is, he's pulling 170+. up the Mountain
17:35 @ 128.7MPH average:eek:

To put Higgins attempt into context, the absolute course record (Michael Dunlop, on a BMW S1000RR) is 16:53 @ 133.9MPH

Higgins just about equalled the SuperSport (600cc) lap record!!

I had a VHS (remember them?) of Hannu Mikkola, pretty much saying that though he had lots of success with Audi, he preferred driving the Escorts, down to it being the way it handled and 'spoke' to him. There appear to be rally schools still using them now.

biggs682

Touch it up and ride it
Location
Northamptonshire
However, quatro (as I believe it was initially badged??) brings to mind one person only

Michelle Mouton:wub::wub:

how could i forget that lady , her co driver was nice and polite as well

As the clip alongside names itself; Michèle Mouton la femme qui dérange :wacko:

Hmm?
A 'What if?' question
Sabine Schmidt v Michelle Mouton, on the Nurburgring (yes, even given Schmidts pedigree there), a rally circuit, & then a neutral ground

You've just sorted out the 'What do you want for Christmas?' question.Thanks :okay:

Schmidt/Mouton. I'd vote for a rallycross for the neutral 3rd round. Rallycross is brilliant anyway, but with those 2...
