Damn Peugeot boot won't open

So the saga of the immobiliser key not working continues ...

I put a new battery in the key and went to reprogramme the key to the car, using the manual - tried the key - still won't lock using the plip buttons. Usually wouldn't bother me but the boot cannot be opened using a key in lock and it is locked electronically.

Car to garage and eight hours later - they tell me the BSI unit has had it and the job will cost £400 for a new unit, labour and to have Peugeot reprogramme the new unit to the car. That's half way to a high spec cycle!!

Does anyone know if there is a way I can manually spring the boot from inside the car with the seats down? I don't mind not having an immobilser but when it comes to filling the boot with bags of manure for my allotment I do need the boot open!

I'm not sure what model Peugeot you have but the older the better with this issue.

If you fold down the seats, you should be able to remove the pad/cover which goes on the inside of the bootlid. You may find a sheet of plastic behind it. If so, cut a hole in the plastic and you will see the short rods which operate the catch on the bootlid. Just pull them manually. There will be one going to the button on the boot, another going to the central locking motor and possibly a third going to the key lock on the bootlid (if you have one).

Thanks for that - the car's in bits at the garage and it looks like I either forefeit the £100 spent so far finding the problem or go the extra £300 to have a new unit and programmed by Peugeot so I guess I will pay the full whack in case the BSI unit corrupts further, affecting the indicators etc. But worth bearing in mind for next time it happens.

Is it at a Peugeot dealer? Best advice would be to find a good independent Peugeot specialist who will try to repair your car rather than throw new parts at it at your expense in the hope of catching the problem.
 
I have a 406 and 307 outside and both will work without the plip buttons if you just stick the key in the drivers door and turn it.

if the problem it between key and little box then that will override it all.

If the problem is now within the car and the box will not tell the doors to unlock or lock then that is not something you can live with as the doors will not lock or unlock either.

There is something I remember about turning the key and holding it to take off or put on the deadlocks.

I would be tempted to disconnect the battery overnight to see if it settles down on its own.
 
Don't know if this is any help: there's plenty of stuff like this if you google "peugeot BSI unit" or similar.

I don't think my (1990s vintage) car has a BSI, I do know it has miles and miles of wiring going all over the place. I mentioned about the cable loom going into the driver's door in the other thread; when it snapped on me (in France) it cost about 300 Euros to fix. These things don't come cheap! - the car itself isn't worth much more than that. But in my case it was almost all down to labour. In France, by law the garage has to show you a breakdown of cost into parts and labour, before they start work on your car. Good practice!

Is there not a central locking switch on the dash? I'm not familiar with Pugs (well, I had a 205GTI in my yoof!), but many cars have a dash switch to lock/unlock all the doors; when you unlock them all, that should also unlock the boot.

How old is the car, what model?

A friend had a similar problem with a Renault and after some searching I found a forum of Renault owners who all knew this problem and many who had had to pay to repair it had got money off from Renault because it was unacceptable for the problem to occur on such a young car.

I would definitely be complaining to the dealer/Peugeot and be trying to get money off the repair if the car was less than 5 years old.
