I've ridden one. It was heavy and a little too bouncy for me. They were de rigeur in the early 90s.

From a strength point of view, I can't understand why they would want to remove one of the faces of the triangle.

The loss of structural strength would force them to beef up the rest of the frame with all the associated weight penalties .
