Going downhill?

Something I noticed whilst out riding my heavily laden bike recently, on several occasions when I could have sworn I was on a downhill stretch I had to keep pedalling just to keep moving. I found this totally baffling and quite disheartening. Has anyone else ever suffered this or am I going mad!

I've come across this phenonemon a few times, the road ahead looks downhill but in fact you are going up an incline. Even when I switch to profile view on my Garmin Edge which confirms I am going uphill, my brain still does not accept it. Its all a trick of the eyes due to the surrounding terrain.

I wear spectacles that distort the view, so that all but distinct uphills look to be downhill. Great for morale!

'Faux plat montant' - there's a nice 'faux plat descendant' on exiting from Windsor via the Prince Consort Gate - along Sheet Street Road toward Windsor! Bizarre.
