Hello, I'm in Chelmsford and looking for advice and members opinions of a good starter road bike to purchase. Have never ridden one before but I'm looking forward to getting out on the roads. :-)

Welcome to CycleChat @Juliette - I've moved your post into the What Bike? forum where you'll hopefully get lots of good advice and suggestions.

Do you have a budget in mind or are you open to any and all suggestions (there's a lot of 'em)? ^_^

Cheers,
Shaun

The Btwin Tribans are really popular at the minute and great value from decalton http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-500-se-road-bike-black-id_8306187.html. Pretty heavy bikes but the triple helps up the hills. I'd avoid the Halfords Carrera brand, heard too many bad stories. If you can stretch to a sora equipped bike though I think its worth the upgrade over microshift or Claris groupsets. As a starter bike though, make sure whatever you do get a compact chainset or a triple chainset. You don't want to be walking up the hills too much!

Hi Shaun, as it's my first bike probably not more that £1500. I'm not sure what that buys you in the world of bikes but the cheaper the better really and then if I like it I'll upgrade.

Thank you for this, I'll look into these brands and hopefully I won't be walking up any hills but that may be wishful thinking

Do you really want to spend as much as £1500?

The giant avail range are really good women specific road bikes, there are some good deals to be had

Giant have concept stores, there's one in Cambridge, or a massive one at St. Paul's, walking distance from Liverpool Street. I think they have a sale on their 2015 models

The Avail 4 or 3 would be a good starter option, around £500 depending on reductions

These guys in East London have good deals too on giant models

Another option would be to go to Evans and get some testrides, they have a wide range of brands (not giant) and will have deals on the outgoing 2015 models

That was the budget for my first bike a couple of years back. I tried out a number of bikes and ended up with a Genesis Equilibrium which was on sale at about £600. I have upgraded it a little but not all that much. I thought I would end up replacing it with something more bling but I never have as it is a joy to ride and fits my needs (recreational cycling for general fitness).

I think the best thing to do would be to have a clear idea what you will use it for, try out a number of different bikes from different places over a number of weeks and then go with the one that you feel suits you best.

Plus one for the decathlon Triban range. Very hard to beat for value for money.

Nothing wrong with Microshift also, whilst 8 speed it shifts very well and the levers are great for smaller hands too.

Sorry I didn't see you were looking at spending £1500. For that money you can get a really good bike, just make sure you get the right size! Here is a nice Fuji which would be all the bike you would ever need: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fuji/supreme-23-2015-womens-road-bike-ec069056 but if it was me I'd go with this Trek: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/silque-s-c-2015-womens-road-bike-ec074286

The isospeed decoupler is what you get on the Domane which is known as the most comfortable bike you can buy. Also the bike has 25mm tyres which helps comfort and the compact chainset with 32 tooth cassette gives you a wide range of gears. Plus it looks awesome in that crystal white!
